2020 Annual Meeting with Joseph South

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Worcester Education Collaborative’s (WEC) tenth-year celebration opened in the fall of 2019 with our annual meeting and words of wisdom from our keynote speaker John King, President and CEO of the Education Trust. King’s words affirmed the critical and ongoing importance of the work of our organization in demanding excellence in education for all.

The ground beneath our feet shifted suddenly and dramatically as the impact of COVID-19 and a re-charged civil rights movement in the wake of the death of George Floyd required immediate and fundamental change in every sector.

This year, our annual meeting will be held virtually via Zoom on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 4pm. We welcome our Worcester community and administrators, educators, youth, and families across the nation to join us in a conversation about the forced reimagining of public education in current and post-pandemic times and the models our organization is implementing to address the needs of our students.

Keynote: Joseph South

We are looking forward to hosting Joseph South, the Chief Learning Officer with the International Society for Technology in Education, an organization that is a leader in understanding and advancing digital and remote learning.

He formerly served as the director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. In his role at the department, he was an adviser to the Secretary of Education and developed national educational technology policy, formed public-private partnerships to assist state and local education leaders in transitioning to digital learning, helped school districts expand the use of openly licensed educational resources (OERs), and collaborated with stakeholders to nurture a robust ecosystem of edtech entrepreneurs and innovators.

He also worked on a cross-governmental team to bring high-speed broadband, interactive devices, professional development for educators and leaders, and high-quality affordable digital content to U.S. classrooms. He is a strong proponent of the active use of technology by learners.

A Call to Support Our Youth

WEC’s work impacts each student in the Worcester Public Schools. WEC has a well-earned reputation as a knowledgeable contributor to the work of education as a tenacious and critical friend of both our schools and our community—one that keeps the needs of our children unrelentingly at the fore. We are regarded as an honest broker and are consistently called upon to lend our expertise to projects and working groups focused on teaching and learning and have placed a stake in the ground with work that falls into three broad areas:

  1. Community engagement and capacity building

  2. Work toward education improvement

  3. Improving educational achievement and increasing educational attainment

We hope to see you at this event centered around education, knowledge sharing, and impact.
